The Bulldogs beat Osceola 18 to 15. That's the first win in this series since 2010. They scored on offense, defense and special teams, forced three turnovers, and held the Kowboys to 138 yards. Coach Mike Short called it a total team effort.
One vote picked your November ballot. Kirk Zilke took first in the August 18 primary for City Council Seat 5. A hand recount Saturday gave Alex Rodriguez second place by a single vote. Those two meet November 3.
The school district wants another mill. Superintendent Mark Shanoff says Osceola faces a $100 million shortfall over four years and has already cut 785 positions. The November 3 referendum runs about $200 a year on a home worth $200,000, and it expires in four years.

Before this was a veterans' town, it was a sugar town. In 1886, twenty three years before the Union men arrived, Hamilton Disston planted 20 acres of cane near East Lake Tohopekaliga. By 1887 he had 1,800 acres and a brick mill crushing almost 372 tons a day. In 1892 the place made 1.2 million pounds of sugar.
Then Congress killed the sugar bounty in 1894 and the Great Freeze hit that December. The whole thing folded. Disston built a railway to haul the cane to Kissimmee, and you drive past what's left of it all the time. That old brick depot at New York Avenue and 9th Street is VFW Post 3227 today.
