Weekly roundup

What’s changing around St. Cloud

St. Cloud is now the fastest-growing incorporated city in Osceola County. The city's population grew nearly 20% between 2020 and 2024, nearly triple the growth rate of Kissimmee over the same stretch. If it feels like St. Cloud is changing fast, that's because it is.

As that growth accelerates, the city just hired someone to help manage it. Jeffrey Ball, a certified planner with 25 years of experience in state and local government, has been named the city's new Community Development Director, overseeing planning, zoning, and code compliance. City Manager Veronica Miller said he knows the challenges of rapid growth firsthand.

Heads up for families. The playground at Chisholm Park will be temporarily closed April 21–24 from 7:30am to 2:30pm daily for safety surfacing replacement. The rest of the park stays open. Peghorn Nature Park and the Lakefront are solid alternatives while the work gets done.

Did You Know

The cross that used to top St. Cloud's water tower

For decades, an illuminated Latin cross sat on top of St. Cloud's water tower along US-192. Locals used it as a guidepost. Fishermen on East Lake Toho used it to navigate home. In 1987 the ACLU filed a lawsuit challenging the display, a federal court sided with them in 1989, and the city agreed to remove the cross in 1990. The original cross didn't disappear though. It was moved to a 60-foot private tower in nearby Intercession City, where it has stood since 1995. You can still see it today, just a few miles down the road.
