AROUND TOWN

Summer ends Monday morning. Osceola County schools start Monday, August 10. Elementary Meet the Teacher wraps up Friday afternoon, 3:30 to 5:30.

Bulldogs football is back next Friday. The Kickoff Classic lands August 14 with St. Cloud on the road at East Ridge. The county's newest varsity program makes its debut this season too.

A high school senior is about to get paid to paint. Toho Water is picking one senior to design a permanent mural, with a $750 scholarship and $250 in supplies on the line. Applications run through August 31.

The speakeasy bookstore at 1118 New York Ave runs on one motto: come in as strangers, leave as friends. Books up front, live jazz on Fridays, and one of the coziest rooms downtown.

The lake out your back door has a name that's a whole sentence. Tohopekaliga comes from the Seminole for "we will gather together here." Another reading traces it to words for fort site, from the years Seminole families sheltered on the lake's islands. Either way, folks have been gathering at Toho a lot longer than we have.
