AROUND TOWN
Downtown is getting 450 parking spots and new apartments. City Council approved a $6.7 million apartment complex and parking garage next to City Hall, funded mostly by the city's redevelopment agency. The mayor says it will roughly quadruple downtown parking, with 250 spots reserved for the new residents and the rest open to everyone.
Friday night lights are back, and all three schools play. The Bulldogs open the preseason at East Ridge, the Harmony Longhorns visit Freedom, and brand new Nova Lakes High on Nova Road hosts Pine Ridge in the first football game in school history, 7pm kickoff. The real opener lands Aug 21 when Osceola comes to St. Cloud. Full county schedule.
Two weeks left for the mural money. Toho Water is taking applications from high school seniors to design a permanent mural in its admin building. The winner gets a $750 scholarship plus $250 in supplies. Deadline is August 31.

The brick hall at 1101 Massachusetts Ave is the reason we're called Soldier City. Union Civil War veterans founded St. Cloud as their retirement colony in 1909, then built the GAR Memorial Hall themselves in 1914, funding it with $8,000 in stock certificates. Today it's one of the best preserved GAR halls in the country, reopened as a Civil War museum.
